S45 is the compact-excavator hitch standard, fitted to machines in the 5–9 tonne class — the bridge between mini-ex and midi-ex. Common S45 carriers include the Volvo ECR88, CAT 308, JCB 86C, Komatsu PC88, Kubota KX080, Hitachi ZX85, Liebherr A 910, and Doosan DX85. S45 uses a 45 mm pin with bracket centres sized for the slightly heavier compact class.

Attachments pinned to S45 are mid-weight: 200–350 kg buckets, 280 kg breakers, 165 kg auger drives. The compact class is the workhorse for landscaping, drainage, fence and signage work, small site preparation, and Nordic forestry support roles. Which excavators use S45?
S45 is standard for most 5–9 tonne compact European excavators including the Volvo ECR88, CAT 308, JCB 86C-2, Komatsu PC88MR, Kubota KX080-4, Hitachi ZX85USB, Liebherr A 910, and Doosan DX85R-7. Confirm by checking your machine’s manual or using our Quick Hitch Finder.
Can I move S60 attachments to my S45 machine?
Not without re-pinning. S60 pins are 50 mm — too large for an S45 bracket. Our Saltsjö-Boo workshop can re-pin the bracket to S45 (typical turnaround 2–3 days, allow longer for heavy attachments). Contact us before moving attachments between machines.
What’s the smallest breaker that suits an S45 carrier?
For 5–9 tonne machines the AWA Hydraulic Breaker (280 kg, 350 J impact, S45 pinning) is the recommended size. The 7–14% rule of thumb gives a target breaker weight of 350–1 250 kg for this class — the AWA sits at the lower end, which is appropriate for everyday demolition rather than continuous quarry work.
