S40 Quick Hitch — What Mini Excavators Run S40?

S40 is the smallest of the five common European quick-hitch standards, fitted to mini excavators in the 3–6 tonne class. It’s the most popular standard for landscapers, fence contractors, garden-build operators, and rental fleets running compact machines like the Kubota KX037, Volvo EC55, CAT 305, JCB 48Z, and Komatsu PC55. Pin diameter is 35 mm with a pin-to-pin centre that suits 3-tonne to 6-tonne carriers.

Attachments pinned to S40 run lighter — typical bucket weight 80–200 kg, breaker weight 200–300 kg, auger drives 130–170 kg. That keeps the carrier balanced and protects the boom from the cyclic loads that bigger attachments inflict. We stock a broad S40 range across both GORE (premium) and AWA (value) brands. S40 common questions

How do I know my mini excavator is S40?
S40 is standard for most 3–6 tonne European mini excavators including the Kubota KX037-4 / KX057-5, Volvo EC55, CAT 305, JCB 48Z, Hitachi ZX55, Doosan DX55, and Komatsu PC55MR. Your machine’s manual will state the pin geometry, or use our Quick Hitch Finder to map make + model to standard.
Can I run an S45 attachment on an S40 hitch?
No — the pin diameter and centres differ. Trying to force an S45 attachment onto an S40 hitch is unsafe and won’t lock properly. You can have the bracket re-pinned at our Saltsjö-Boo workshop (2–3 day turnaround) if you’re moving an existing attachment between machines.
Is the S40 hitch CE-compliant?
Yes. Both the AWA Quick Hitch and GORE Quick Hitch S60 (the latter not S40 — see /hitch/s60) meet EN 474-5. For S40 we currently stock the AWA mechanical hitch only; a hydraulic S40 from GORE is on our 2026 roadmap. Call us for current availability.
